Women drivers could be among those looking to 'buy green' in the next 12 months, according to the latest survey by What Car?.

However, the research revealed that this was likely to be a choice motivated by finance rather than environmental concern.

What Car? found that 47 per cent of the two-thirds who said they would look to buy an environmentally-friendly motor over the next 12 months would do so because of financial reasons, with 19 per cent doing so for the environment.

"With the cost of living increasing and with wages failing to keep up, car buyers are saying financial pressures are of more concern than helping the environment," said Steve Fowler, group editor of What Car?.

Last month, a survey carried out on behalf of Direct Line revealed that 60 per cent of women motorists would be put off buying a high-emissions vehicle following the proposed showroom tax announced in this year's Budget.
