Women drivers to welcome anti-offender plans? 20 March 08
Female drivers may be enthused to read that foreign drivers who break the law in the UK and evade punishment by going back to their home country could be traced and penalised.
Plans unveiled by the European commission mean that offenders who speed, drink drive, run red lights or fail to wear a seatbelt in European Union (EU) countries will be traceable in their homeland through a cross-border system and liable for punishments.
Announcing the proposals, EU transport commissioner Jacques Barrot stated that impunity given to non-residents "creates a feeling of injustice".
Meanwhile, speaking to the Press Association, a government spokesman said the state supports the plans and would be taking them into consideration.
"Certainly, there is a need to ensure that people visiting the UK who put others' lives at risk on our roads should not escape punishment merely by fleeing the country."
