Female motorists are being reminded not to use their mobile phones while driving after a police campaign caught out thousands of drivers.

The Liverpool Daily post reports police figures from the north-west show more than 19,000 men and women were fined for the offence by Merseyside and Cheshire police forces in 2006.

Officers said both sexes face a £60 fine and three points on their licence if caught on the phone while at the wheel of a moving vehicle.

Merseyside Police chief inspector Chris Markey told the paper: "Ultimately, the priority for all of our roads policing operations is to stop people being killed or injured."

Drivers who deny being on the phone when stopped by police have found officers check their handset's log to see when the last call was made.
