Female motorists may be among the many Britons found to increasingly be opting for greener modes when choosing a used car.

Research by Experian has shown that used diesel vehicle sales rose by four per cent in recent months, while petrol alternatives decreased in popularity.

Meanwhile, sales of used electric vehicles were up by an unprecedented 473 per cent last year, with sales of hybrid vehicles also rising by a positive 72 per cent.

Managing director of Experian's automotive division Kirk Fletcher commented: "There has been a lot of media attention, not only around the environment and the effect of the most polluting cars, but also on the forthcoming car tax increases and the rise in fuel duty."

He added that financial incentives had particularly impacted upon car-buying habits over the past few years.

However, sales of sports utility vehicles also showed an upturn last year, especially in the West Midlands.
