Women 'leading the way' with greener cars 18 March 08
Foxy lady drivers are proving they are savvier than their male counterparts when it comes to buying environmentally-friendly motors, new research suggests.
Used car hypermarket Carcraft has said that in 2007 most of the used cars bought by consumers that fell into the larger car category - and therefore considered gas guzzlers - were purchased by men.
According to the firm, around four in five cars (79 per cent) with engines of 3000cc or greater were bought by men, suggesting women motorists were responsible for just one out of every five of these cars purchased.
The firm's managing director has also said that the car hypermarket does what it can to make consumers aware of the emissions such cars produce.
"We display CO2 emissions in grams per kilometre on all 8,000 cars in Carcraft stock. We also grade our vehicles from A for the lowest emissions through to G for the highest to make it easier for customers," Barry Nightingale said.
A quarter (26 per cent) of people buying the larger cars were men in the 51 to 65 age bracket.
Research released recently from the Environmental Transport Association revealed that women are less inclined to lose interest in the media coverage of greener motoring issues than men.
