More than two-thirds of women killed in car accidents are passengers in cars being driven by male rather than female drivers, new research has revealed.

According to the Road Safety Authority (RSA) of the 1,444 women killed or seriously injured in a car crash between 1997 and 2006, 68 per cent (345) were killed while being driven by a man.

The RSA has started a new "He drives, she dies" campaign, which raises awareness of the dangers of being a female passenger in a car.

According to Noel Brett, chief executive of the RSA, the majority of women did not feel safe in the passenger seat of a car.

He told the Independent: "Eight out of ten young women questioned said they regularly felt frightened travelling with a male driver."

"The big issue was speed, and when they did comment on speed the experience they inevitably found was the male driver would speed up," he added.

Last year 6,737 motorists were killed on British roads – the lowest level since records began.
