Women drivers faced with an increased car insurance premium from their cover providers should not "just accept it", an expert says.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) said female motorists should shop around rather than expect their providers to up prices.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA, said drivers should be aware using brokers could help them get a better deal.

He said: "Don’t just accept it on the chin. You might have hit a certain age or your car might be one year older, which gets you an extra discount."

The AA recently said the average car insurance premium for both sexes had risen by around six per cent in the past year to £682.

Mr Trudgill added many cover providers were upping car insurance costs because motoring cover remained a relatively low-profit area for them.

BIBA is the UK's leading general insurance organisation, representing the interests of brokers, intermediaries and customers.

It provides training, technical advice, guidance on regulation and business support in an effort to raise industry standards.
