Young drivers are being warned to be on the lookout for dodgy second-hand cars following the results of an undercover operation.

Trading Standards and Hertfordshire police discovered five out of eight low-priced second-hand vehicles were not safe to be driven.

Saying younger drivers were more likely to buy cheaper vehicles, the RAC warned its own research found three-quarters of used cars had faults that would result in a failed MOT.

RAC inspections manager Nicola Johnson said: "Youngsters or first-timers looking for a used car bargain are entering a minefield and are unlikely to have the right level of knowledge to know what to look for."

The advice could apply to young female drivers looking for a used car, and could also help improve safety and reduce the risk of having to claim on female friendly car insurance policies.
