Female friendly Caffyns helps foxy lady drivers tackle bullies

A recent car confidence evening held by female friendly Vauxhall dealership, Caffyns in Tunbridge Wells, has prepared local women drivers for the everyday dangers they can face on the road.

Karate instructor and self-protection specialist Grant Hicks developed the personal safety theme by demonstrating a quick-fire method of disarming a potential attacker in three easy moves, using an everyday object like a torch or a pen.

"Women drivers are perceived as being more vulnerable than men and can be an easy target when it comes to road rage," said Grant. "Also, many people are scared to get involved so you have to be able to defend yourself."

Aggressive driving behaviour and motoring bullies were addressed by ex-Police Chief Inspector Vic Botterill.

"Mouthing sorry can stop a minor incident turning into road rage," he said.
"If you know you're wrong, just say it. If it's gone beyond that and you're dealing with a violent man, keep your distance - invading his personal space isn't going to make the situation better. Speak calmly and NEVER, EVER, SMILE. That will only fuel what is already an emotional bonfire" he emphasised.

Female motorists were also shown how to change a car's wheel and were given practical advice about roadside emergencies and routine car maintenance.

Sally Gummer, a hospital nurse from Crowborough felt she had gained a lot from the evening. "I drive a great deal for my job and it's good to know how to cope should my car ever break down by the roadside. I've never had to change a wheel before and I certainly found the awareness and self-protection role-play useful."

FOXY Founder, Steph Savill added "We are pleased to promote these excellent confidence building evenings to women drivers. Many of our members are seriously worried about their personal and family safety on the road and would like to be fully prepared for adverse conditions, even if this is an unlikely incident."
