I first encountered Sara Williams at the Car Dealer Expo at Silverstone in June where she was speaking about her career in the inaugural ‘Women in the Automotive Industry’ session.
Sara is the single most successful female British driver in the history of national rallying and last October she celebrated a highly commendable debut finish at the Wales Rally GB.
So far in 2015 she has won the Red Dragon Rally outright by 1 minute 21 seconds when, with co-driver, Patrick Walsh, they navigated 36 stage miles in less than ideal conditions, coming out on top after a faultless day of driving and teamwork.
Doing my homework, less than ideal conditions is rallying-speak for driving fast regardless of torrential rain causing incredibly slippery driving surfaces. Margin for error is greater on longer stages, for obvious reasons, as minor mistakes early on can translate to huge time losses at the finishing post.
In this instance, the longest stage was the final one where Sara and Patrick excelled with Sara posting a fastest stage time of 14.31 minutes – that’s a massive lead of 30 seconds ahead of the nearest car.
This success marks Sara’s third win overall in a rally event, after she famously became the first female driver to win a rally outright for 30 years in 2013.
Sara also co-runs Brecon Motors, a MG car dealership and used car showroom in mid-Wales, together with her father Jonathan.
This iconic British MG brand traces its history back to 1924 and is now owned by SAIC China. It has seen an upsurge in sales recently because of its stylish range of cars that are fun to drive and represent excellent value for money.
Led by British designer Tony Williams-Kenny, the UK team is responsible for the interior and exterior design of all MG products worldwide and the final assembly of UK cars takes place in Birmingham.
Today’s MG models include the MG3 with starting prices from £8399 and the MG6 from just £13995.
The MG3 is a new generation Super-Mini with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and lots of personalisation options so owners can make their car their own style-statement.
The MG6 is a medium-sized hatchback with high levels of interior comfort, a spacious cabin and a cavernous boot. This car won the 2014 Auto Express Driver Power Best Handling Award.
One thing you might be surprised to read here is that Sara is still in her 20s so we can expect to hear a lot more about her achievements in the years to come.
But it’s clear from her final comment that she’s loving it all.
Sara said: “Spending my week days, and weekends, in what has historically been a male dominated sector hasn’t been short of challenges but I have loved every minute of it.”
