Product Review - DriveGuard Tyres

Don't panic, you've 50 miles to get this sorted...

Run-flat tyres called DriveGuard are now available to motorists whose cars are fitted with a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System). As a result you’re much less likely to EVER experience a dangerous puncture-induced tyre blow out on the motorway. So please read on…

Did you know that 90% of new cars are sold without a spare wheel today? Or that too many motorists don’t know they haven’t got a spare wheel until they need it?

When did you last check to see what you’re expected to do in the event of a tyre failure?

Manufacturers do without heavy spare wheels to keep vehicle weight down and improve fuel consumption so this makes sense.

So, when you get the inevitable tyre puncture (and at least 120,000 cars did in 2015, according to RAC experience) you either need to change the wheel yourself, hang around for a breakdown service or use a puncture repair kit. Right?

Not entirely. There is now a runflat tyre option for more of us. To save us all this hands on stuff and/or associated stress.

Run Flat Tyres

If you drive a car with run flat tyres (BMWs are a prime example) you’ll know you get an early dashboard warning of losing tyre pressure, such as a puncture, and have about 50 miles, doing a speed of 50 maximum, to get you and your car to a remedial tyre fitting centre safely. So there’d be no need to panic in between motorway exits for example.

So that’s by far the best (but not a cheap) formula for safer and stress less motoring in future.

New Puncture Tyre Solution

Fortunately for the rest of us without run flat tyres, Bridgestone has been beavering away, developing a new DriveGuard (run flat equivalent) tyre that’s capable of being used on almost all cars* providing they have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

NB: This means you’ll have 50 miles, driving at 50mph to get your tyre replaced. That’s a big relief.

*Since November 2014, all new cars are required to have TPMS, which measures the tyres’ internal pressure and alerts drivers to any pressure loss via the dashboard display. So the majority of these can have DriveGuard tyres fitted.

We’ll keep you posted about these as this of course as stocks get more widely available.

But for the meantime, just remember the name DRIVEGUARD when it comes to tyre shopping.
