Lisa May is a Service Controller for Town & Country Cars in Aldershot. Town & Country Cars is a car dealership based in Ash and has been a Suzuki franchise holder since 1979.

About Lisa
I have always loved cars from an early age and I am definitely mechanically-minded. I have been in the motor industry since 1988 and am a Licentiate (LIMI) within the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
I enjoy being a hands on Service Controller.
What was it that encouraged you to join the motor industry?
My niece introduced me to the motor trade when I was 20. I couldn’t drive at the time (I do now of course) but despite this I was sufficiently interested in engines that I even helped to maintain my dad’s taxi.
What do you like most about your job?
I love dealing with people and cars – this is the perfect job combo for me.
Last year I thought I fancied a change and left for a senior marketing, advertising and training role in a small independent garage.
But I quickly missed the physical experience of dealing with the customers, face to face and over the phone, whilst I sort out their mechanical problems for them, getting my hands dirty on occasion.
Why do you think women choose Town & Country Cars for their garage services?
I put this down to our honesty, transparency and an entirely professional approach. Yes there’s a lot more to it than that of course but the key ingredient is trust and I think these elements are what create this relationship – customer loyalty comes from this too.

Can you recommend the motor industry as a career for women?
Yes, if you’re not afraid of getting your hands dirty and mucking in. You need to be a hard worker, flexible in your approach and a team player. We all work hard and support each other until all our jobs are done.
Then the reward comes by knowing you’ve done a really great job and by being appreciated alike by customers, your colleagues and the business!
Which car is your favourite among the ones on sale at Town and Country?
I travel from Basingstoke to Aldershot every day so I need a safe, reliable and zippy car to get me there.
I particularly like (and today my favourite would be) the Suzuki Swift for speed, economy, looks and value for money.
What more can I say? It’s very hard to beat that formula!
