How To Do The 20p Coin Tyre Safety Check

Some women tell us that their husband or partner checks their car tyres for them.

If they do, then that’s fine.

But if they say they do, but don’t, that’s a problem for these women because the driver is ultimately responsible for illegal tyres that are dangerous and could well cause an accident.

So if he doesn’t check your car tyres monthly, EITHER you need to do it for yourself (take your trusty 20p coin for starters…) OR you need a local tyre centre you can trust to do this for you.

Either way, we always recommend that women drivers take responsibility for their car tyres.

Tyre Background

When you buy new tyres they come with 8mm tread. As tyre tread wears, tyres lose their ability to grip the road and stop as quickly as they used to.

Without adequate tread depth your tyres may not be able to perform properly, especially in wet conditions, reducing your safety on the road. It is therefore advisable, say we, to consider replacing your tyres BEFORE they reach the legal minimum of 1.6mm.

NB: Drivers whose tyres don’t meet the minimum tread depth of 1.6mm risk a fine of up to ¬£2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

But the point of all this is that the driver could hit, injure or kill someone for want of a few extra braking feet as a result of better tyre tread.

The 20p Tyre Check

So here’s how to check if your tyre tread is legal and/or when you need new vehicle tyres.

A bog-standard 20p coin can save lives. It’s quick and easy to use – to check that your tyres are legal.

Just take a 20p coin (see image above) and insert it in various positions across the road facing tyre grooves.

What you are looking for is any tyre/position where the rim of the 20p coin is visible. This tells you at a glance when a tyre is getting close to being illegal ie potentially dangerous.

That’s all. And whilst you’re doing this, look at your tyres for signs of any tyre-wall damage or early punctures – it’s always so much cheaper to repair than replace them providing you spot damage early enough.

If you’d prefer a tyre centre to do this check (and where you can buy value for money tyres), a FOXY Lady Approved garage will do this for you for free.

They’ve all signed the FOXY Lady Promise to ‘never overcharge, patronise or sell women services they don’t need’ so you can trust them not to. Because if they did, women would tell us and we’d likely remove them from our network.

Sadly there are well known High Street tyre fitting names that won’t (can’t?) sign our FOXY Lady Promise. From this we deduce that they probably pay staff commission and therefore encourage them to sell us tyres & related services we mightn’t need.

Make sure you don’t support businesses that are actively doing this to us and others, usually without our knowledge.

Ladies can join FOXY Lady Drivers Club and benefit from priceless motoring tips, advice and offers, designed for women, in future.

Garages can support our not for profit motoring Club by applying to join a FOXY Lady Approved network.
